Creating Calm with FLIP IT®:

Adult Self-Regulation in Challenging Moments

a self-paced online course

It turns out that what works for young children can also work for adults! During challenging moments, both children and adults benefit from using the FLIP IT strategy, an effective four-step process for responding to difficult situations with empathy, understanding, and intention.

FLIP IT stands for Feelings, Limits, Inquiries, and Prompts. Originally developed to help adults address challenging behaviors in young children, these four steps can also be adapted to help adults navigate stress, conflict, and strong emotions in their own lives.

When faced with difficult feelings or stressful situations, FLIP IT provides a practical framework for validating emotions, establishing healthy boundaries, and engaging in compassionate problem solving. By learning to use FLIP IT with yourself, you can become more regulated, resilient, and prepared to support children through their own challenging moments.

Participants will explore how FLIP IT can become a go-to strategy for creating calm, strengthening self-awareness, and fostering emotional regulation. After all, children need calm, connected, and regulated adults.

This course takes approximately one hour to complete and includes interactive activities, opportunities for reflection, and a final assessment. The course is narrated by the author, so please have speakers or headphones available for the best learning experience.

[This course] offered great insight on adult regulation and how dysregulation shows up in everyday interactions in different ways. The knowledge checks were simple but effective, and the content was easy to follow. Overall, it was a quick, informative training that reinforced the importance of staying grounded when supporting children.

This course delivered a profound lightbulb moment I didn’t see coming! It completely exposed a hidden habit—one we are all guilty of as adults—that sounds like a positive but is actually a disguised form of over-functioning.

While the world is full of surface-level advice on healthy coping, this highlighted for me that the work leading up to coping is just as important, if not more so, and it’s a journey. I’ve done some serious work in the past (before becoming a parent!). So if you’re like me, and you’ve thought to yourself, “I’ve already done the work, and I know what I need to do. Why is this still happening?!” then you need this masterclass in shifting your perspective and revisiting the work to break the invisible autopilot pattern that’s gotten me so many times!
