Understanding the Science of Resilience

In this webinar, participants will learn about the hopeful message behind the science of resilience, as well as the practical strategies that provide powerful opportunities to promote resilience in the children and adults in our lives. Join Susan Damico, M.A., director of the Devereux Center for Resilient Children, as she reviews the compelling body of research behind resilience theory. Participants will leave this webinar with a stronger understanding of the science that informed the development of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) Program, as well as the promising outcomes that result when programs use resilience-building resources.

An Introduction to the DECA Program

The Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) Program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is a strength-based assessment and planning system designed to promote resilience in young children, 4 weeks up through 5 years old. This one-hour webinar will introduce you to this program and brief you on its five steps, as well as help you understand the important terms of risk factors and protective factors. Please join us to learn about a program being utilized by thousands of programs across the country to help young children, and the adults who care for them, build resilience.

FLIP IT Instead of Flipping Out: You Can Transform Challenging Behavior

During these uncertain times, we are all experiencing challenges, stress and even trauma. Young children have always shown us their stress in the form of behaviors that we find challenging. As we manage the pressures in our own lives, we are often stumped by what to say and do when a child has done something hurtful, impulsive, disruptive or disrespectful. FLIP IT is four, simple and effective steps to help us transform a difficult moment into one where everyone can learn and grow. We can help children learn about their feelings and gain self-control by using the mnemonic: F-Feelings, L-Limits, I-Inquiries, P-Prompts. FLIP IT is kind, practical, realistic, and will improve your relationships with children (ages 3-8 years old). Closed captions are available in English and Spanish.

Building Your Bounce: Simple Strategies for a Resilient You

“If you get up one time more than you fall, you will make it through.” – Chinese Proverb. In this webinar, learn how to take care of YOU so you can better take care of the children whose lives you touch. This webinar will help adults reflect on their own resilience and explore ways to “build their bounce” through simple, easy-to-use strategies. The importance of staff wellness is clear. Join co-author of the book, Building Your Bounce: Simple Strategies for a Resilient You, Dr. Nefertiti Poyner as she shares her insights on this very important topic!

Family Resilience: A Journey of Strength and Support

Our resilience – understand it and fostering it – has never been more important. This is true for each and every one of us and is critical for the children and families we serve. The Devereux Center for Resilient Children invites all adults who support children and families to join us for a resilience-building journey. Dr. Nefertiti Poyner will host this experience, shining a light on the most ordinary ways that we can support and strengthen family resilience. This webinar will introduce basic resilience concepts, and then dive into three key areas, including: (1) Empowering parents to promote safe, trusting, and healing environments, (2) Showing parents how ordinary, everyday interactions are the perfect moments to strengthen children’s resilience, and (3) Helping parents to understand that their own personal resilience (self-care) is essential for overall family resilience.

Resilient Leadership: Strategies for Building Resilient Teams

In this webinar, leaders will have an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a resilient leader and how to build the bounce (resilience) of staff. Learn how to use the Devereux Resilient Leadership Survey (DERLS) to reflect on and create plans that support staff resilience. Leaders will have an opportunity to reflect on their own resilience and explore strategies to build their own bounce as well. Participants will also briefly hear about the outcomes of the research study that looked at the impact of a resilient leadership training series on the resilience of early care and education directors over time.

Rubber Bands and Umbrellas! 5 Practical Strategies for Helping Parents Understand Risk Factors, Protective Factors and Resilience

Fully understanding the concepts of risk factors, protective factors, and resilience can serve as a powerful catalyst for helping each of us navigate life’s challenges. But all too often, the use of jargon and unfamiliar language can get in the way of individuals making true meaning of these terms. We would like to change that! Parents, families, teachers, and anyone interested in learning more are invited to this interactive, reflective learning experience. Join Dr. Nefertiti Poyner, as we uncover some of the key terms often found in the resilience research. We will define those key terms and think about what each word means to us, individually. Grab a few rubber bands and don’t forget your umbrella! Invite a friend and let’s learn together.

Resilience and Racial Equity

We are all striving to create early care and education spaces that promote resilience and racial equity. We invite you to join Nefertiti B. Poyner, Ed.D., and Rachel Wagner, MSW, as they help us think about how resilience work is equity work. Together, we will explore the intersections of risk, protection, resilience, social-emotional learning and racism. Race is not a risk factor, but experiencing racism and implicit bias puts Black and Brown children at higher risk for being overdisciplined and under-nurtured. The protective factors of healthy relationships, self-regulation, initiative, and internal beliefs can fortify both children and adults as we work to create culturally responsive and sustaining environments, where Black and Brown children’s identities can be amplified and empowered. In this webinar, we will learn to use a resilience framework to combat racism and promote social justice in early care and education. If we are going to protect and promote the resilience of Black and Brown children, we each have to fight fearlessly against racial injustice. What will you do differently?

Take Care of YOU, Take ON Challenging Behaviors

Working with children who use challenging behavior can be stressful for the adults who care for and about them. Children often act out because they are having difficulty working through an inner conflict. Ironically, their inner conflict can often mirror our own! How can we help children cope with their feelings when we struggle to work through stress in our adult lives? The good news is, what works for children often works for grown-ups, too! In this webinar, you will learn how the four steps of the successful child strategy called FLIP IT (Feelings, Limits, Inquiries, Prompts) can work for YOU! By exploring your own Feelings, Limits, Inquiries, and Prompts, you can build your own resilience and be better prepared to FLIP the script on challenging behavior with children.
