Research shows that resilient children — those who “bounce back” when faced with stress and/or adversity — tend to be more successful in school and throughout life. The Devereux Center for Resilient Children (DCRC) offers a variety of professional development opportunities focused on the social and emotional health of children and the adults who care for them.

The following professional development opportunities can be customized to meet the needs of any program.

Strategies to Promote Resilience in Young Children

Every early childhood educator would like to reduce children’s challenging behaviors and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others. The Devereux Center for Resilient Children offers customized workshops that focus on why children use challenging behaviors and how to encourage them to find positive ways to get their needs met. Through a variety of hands-on activities, participants will learn:

  • How creating high-quality early childhood environments can increase positive behaviors in young children
  • Techniques that support family involvement in enhancing social and emotional health
  • Strategies to build strong social and emotional skills and resilience in infants, toddlers, or preschoolers

Half-day, full-day and Conference/Keynote sessions available.

Assessing Resilience from Birth through School-age

Devereux offers nationally standardized screening and assessment tools that link results to strategies aimed at promoting young children’s resilience. Professional development options are available that explore best practices and implementation of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) and Devereux School-age (DESSA) tools:

  • The DECA Program for Infants and Toddlers (4 weeks through 3 years old)
  • The DECA Program for Preschoolers Second Edition (3 years through 5 years old)
  • The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (5 years through 13 years old)

In these sessions, participants will learn:

  • Skills for effective observation, assessment, and strategic planning for both the child care and home setting
  • Strategies that promote high quality environments for all children as well as strategies that support individual children with social and emotional needs
  • Creative solutions that encourage family involvement in efforts to strengthen children’s healthy social and emotional development

1-Day Overview, 2-Day Implementation, 1-Day Refresher, 1-Day Strategies and Local Program Mentor and Conference/Keynote sessions available.

Using the DECA-C (Clinical) As a Tool to Measure Strengths and Behavioral Concerns in Preschool Children

The DECA-C is a standardized, norm-referenced behavior rating scale that measures both behaviors related to resilience and behavioral concerns in young children ages two through five. The DECA-C can be used as a companion to the DECA Program and as a stand alone tool. This professional development session is designed for mental health professionals, social workers, and other child-serving professionals who work with children already identified as having challenging behaviors. Participants will learn:

  • How to use the DECA-C to understand the needs of children who display challenging behavior over time
  • How to administer and interpret the DECA-C assessment results
  • How to effectively incorporate the assessment results into a behavior plan

Full-day and distance learning sessions available.
